I'm a percussionist. That usually means one thing (of many): I play a lot of reps. I've found there is only one way to consistently get better at 10+ instruments while studying percussion in college. Consistent, reproducible, focused practice. It's the philosophy I've remained true to in my teaching, my practice, and the design of this app.
Why I built Aubel
I wanted to make this app for musicians like myself. I failed Aural Skills II. I slept in for my 8am classes. I was insecure about my ear. The idea was to combine that consistent, reproducible practice with my biggest weakness, ear training. Regrettably, I realized this too late. Better late than never.
The alarm forces you to train your ear every morning. The Screen Time gate forces you to train your ear to earn those mid-practice doomscrolling sessions (iykyk). The goal is to add ear training to things you already do every single day.
I hope this app helps at least one person, just like me, to feel better about their ear, and hopefully not fail Aural Skills II.
Music majors know the pain of waiting a whole year before they can retake that class.
Ear training that happens.
An iPhone app for music students who keep meaning to practice and never quite do. Morning alarm. Screen Time gate.
